Don’t Compromise the Truth

In the wake of Phil Robertson’s “hiatus” from Ducky Dynasty, I’ve read a number of blogs and comments on Facebook. I’ve also watched both CNN and FOX news to hear what others are saying. I’ve heard a lot of fighting and a lot of opposing views as I’m sure you have as well.

But, after all of that, I have never been more convinced of this truth: “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that need not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15

That was one of the first verses I learned as a child. It is a charge to Timothy, one of Paul’s disciples and it is one of the best reminders today, for all of us who call ourselves “God’s children”.

Friends, we must read our Bibles and get to know God’s words to the Israelites and to the Gentiles (that’s us). We need to know that God is patient, but will not tolerate disobedience to His word. If we don’t, we can be easily deceived by crafty arguments that hinge on emotion rather than truth.

But when we speak, we must speak with love. And speaking the truth in love doesn’t mean that you can’t disagree or have an opinion. It means that when you speak, you speak the heart of God so that you may win some to Him. It means that you care about others, not just winning an argument. And it ultimately means, that you care that people would live the truth of God, rather than exchange it for a lie as Romans 1 talks about. In fact, I’ll encourage you to read that passage today. It’s highlighted here and you can simply click on it. See what God has to say about the issues that were addressed this week.

If I knew that my child was going to fall off a cliff if they take another step in the direction they are heading, you better believe I’d be running and screaming that they stop. Flashes of the life they could have would be running through my mind as I jump in their way. Would some think I was infringing on their independence and right to choose? Sure. But, because I honestly love them, I would show them that there is another way. How much more important are issues of obedience to God?! God has designed a way that might be contrary to the way our culture is going, but it’s His way and I can trust the Creator of the universe, my Creator, and His design for our lives.

With that in mind, ask God for wisdom as you read His word and speak to others about it. Don’t take my word or anyone else’s word for it as you sift through your feelings about this week. Ask the Lord for guidance. Then, as you speak, speak in love and don’t compromise the truth!
